What is a solid-state transformer?

Solid-State Transformer (SST), also known as Power Electronic Transformer (PET), is a new-generation transformer device based on power electronic conversion and high-frequency magnetic isolation.SST can provide voltage transformation, electrical isolation, AC/DC conversion, bidirectional power flow control, power quality management, and interfaces for renewable energy and energy storage.

It is suitable for high-density data centers, AI computing centers, megawatt-level EV charging and battery swapping stations, AC/DC hybrid distribution networks, wind-solar-storage integration, smart microgrids, and integrated generation-grid-load-storage systems.

Medium-voltage DC direct supply — simplifying the EV charging power chain

HIITIO SST replaces the conventional charging architecture with a direct medium-voltage DC bus, eliminating multiple conversion stages and reducing 380 V AC line losses (which are ~6× higher than 1 kV DC losses). Supports native PV/storage integration and V2G bidirectional flow.

Traditional distribution networks are built entirely on AC. But by 2050, an estimated 70% of end-use loads will be inherently DC — EV chargers, battery storage, server racks, LED systems, and variable-speed drives. Running these loads through multiple AC/DC conversion stages wastes energy at every step and makes coordinated control across generation, grid, load, and storage nearly impossible.

SST Component Questions — Answered

What is the difference between SST and a traditional transformer?

Traditional transformers mainly provide line-frequency voltage transformation and isolation. SST uses power electronic conversion and high-frequency isolation to provide voltage transformation, rectification/inversion, DC interfaces, bidirectional power flow and power quality control.

Yes. The SST enables bidirectional step-up and step-down voltage conversion for photovoltaic and energy storage applications, supporting flexible power flow between PV generation, energy storage systems, loads, and the grid.

The system can be designed according to project requirements such as input voltage, output voltage, capacity, interface quantity, cooling method, installation environment and communication/control needs.

DC arcs do not extinguish at a natural current zero the way AC arcs do. Standard AC contactors lack the arc quench geometry, contact gap, and chamber materials to interrupt DC currents reliably above 500 V. Attempting this risks contact welding, sustained arcing, and fire. HIITIO HCF series contactors are specifically designed for DC arc extinction up to 1500 V.

The primary matching parameter is I²t (joule integral). The fuse’s let-through I²t must be lower than the module’s withstand I²t. The fuse voltage rating must exceed the DC bus voltage including transient overshoot, and the continuous current rating must exceed the module’s maximum current with temperature derating. HIITIO’s application engineering team can assist with this calculation.
