NEMA ratings incorporate protection standards for corrosion resistance and gases, while IP ratings only cover protection against ingress of water and particles. This means a NEMA rating often implies broader protection than a comparable IP rating.

There is not a direct correlation between NEMA ratings and IP ratings, as the two systems are based on different sets of variables. However, approximate comparisons can be made.
